The Temporal Dynamics of Learning Center (TDLC), hired our team at CalIt2's Prototyping Studios to consult, design and fabricate their sensor integrated xylophones. The xylophones are not tuned to a standard western tuning. Rather, the researchers use a Gamelan tuning and the integrated sensors can detect the timing and syncopation during sessions.

The project was covered by the BBC and can be seen here: http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-21661689
I worked directly with the client to design a product to provide each student in a classroom with a xylophone to participate with. Lasercut acrylic mounts a milled aluminum bars were mounted onto off-the-shelf bamboo boxes. Assembly was simple enough that the researchers could assemble.
